Tour Description

The Italian island of Sicily is steeped with history, having been at the turbulent crossroads of invasions, conquests and colonisations throughout the millennia. To those visits we can add one of our own, albeit a very benign one indeed, with our exclusive Dragonflies and Damselflies of Sicily tour.

Our tour covers both eastern and western aspects of the island, and involves two island-disecting 'transects' through the island's heartland. We will explore a range of Odonata-friendly habitats on the island, accompanied by the very best guide to the island's winged life - and when we say that renowned Sicilian naturalist Andrea Corso wrote the book where dragonflies and damselflies of Sicily are concerned, that's not merely a turn of phrase - he literally did! Author of the Atlas of the Distribution and Taxonomy of the Odonata of Sicily (2025) there's nobody better qualified to be your leader for this tour. Andrea's knowledge of the island's Odonata life and where to find it is truly second to none.

And the island represents a rich hunting ground for those with a keen interest in Odonata, sitting in the Mediterranean liminal space between mainland Europe and North Africa. Southern Italian and island endemics are present here, in addition to North African species on the edge of their world range, and of course a fine selection of general Southern European species besides.

All the ingredients are in place for a fabulous week of dragonfly and damselfly watching and photography. The group size for this tour is being deliberately kept small, to optimise the photographic opportunities for all participants. And speaking of ingredients, we mustn't forget to mention that, this being Sicily, our group can expect some spectacular food throughout the week, including the opportunity to sample world-famous Etna red wine on the very volcanic slopes of the eponymous smoking mountain itself.

Andrea is a proud native Sicilian, and his knowledge of his island home's culture and history adds further depth and richness to the week. That and his deep knowledge of other wildlife besides Odonata - everything is grist to his mill, so guests can anticipate close encounters with birds, butterflies, reptiles... a full Sicilian wildlife experience is on the cards, but with dragonflies and damselflies as the glittering crown jewels.

Tour Itinerary

  • Day 1 - arrive at Catania airport. Transfer to our comfortable agriturismo on the slopes of majestic Etna. Depending on arrival time, we may have the opportunity for a little exploration of Etna for birds and butterflies, and to enjoy its breathtaking landscape.
  • Day 2 - Exploring the Nebrodi Mountains to search for the Sicilian subspecies of Sombre Goldenring Cordulegaster bidentata sicilica and for one of our main target species of the tour, the endemic and rare Italian Goldenring Cordulegaster trinacriae, as well as for Emerald Spreadwing Lestes dryas (Kirby, 1890), Small Spreadwing Lestes virens (Charpentier, 1825) (the latter Lestes here in Sicily probably a separate endemic sister species yet to be described!), Large Red Damselfly Pyrrhosoma nymphula (Sulzer, 1776), Mediterranean Bluet Coenagrion caerulescens (Fonscolombe, 1838), Southern Hawker Aeshna cyanea (Müller, 1764), Migrant Hawker Aeshna mixta (Latreille, 1805), Southern Migrant Hawker Aeshna affinis (Vander Linden, 1820), Broad-bodied Chaser Libellula depressa (Linnaeus, 1758), and Ruddy Darter Sympetrum sanguineum (Müller, 1764) etc. On this day we will also search for another endemic and peculiar taxon: the Sicilian Small Pincertail Onychogomphus forcipatus siculus. Birds may include Griffon Vulture, Sicilian Marsh Tit, Sicilian Long-tailed Tit, Lanner Falcon, etc.
  • Day 3 - Transfer day to western Sicily. An early morning departure sets us on course for the western coast of Sicily, staying in a rural agriturismo. We will make some stops for wildlife en route to break the journey, enjoy arancini in a beautiful baroque town, and will stop to see the majestic antique Greek temples of Agrigento.
  • Day 4 - Western Sicily. Today we will search for two of the rarest European dragonflies: Ringed Cascader Zygonyx torridus and the Common Hooktail Paragomphus genei (Sélys-Longchamps, 1841) which was described from Sicily in 1841 and despite the name it is not easy to see anywhere. Many other species too should feature in this Odonata-rich day, such as the Northern Banded Groundling Brachythemis impartita (Karsch, 1890), Long Skimmer Orthetrum trinacria and several other species. In the course of the day we'll pay a visit to the wonderful old town of Mazara del Vallo (including some gorgeous ice-cream!). Our explorations will take us to several rivers, rivulets and wetlands to see Yellow-veined Skimmer Orthetrum nitidinerve but also Goblet-marked Damselfly Erythromma lindenii (Sélys-Longchamps, 1840), Small Red-eyed Damselfly Erythromma viridulum (Charpentier, 1840), Small Red Damselfly Ceriagrion tenellum (Villers, 1789), Copper Demoiselle Calopteryx haemorrhoidalis (Vander Linden, 1825), Keeled Skimmer Orthetrum coerulescens (Fabricius, 1798) (form coerulescens, form anceps and intermediates), Red-veined Darter Sympetrum fonscolombii (Sélys-Longchamps, 1840), Blue Emperor Anax imperator Leach, 1815, and Scarlet Darter Crocothemis erythraea (Brullé, 1832).

  • Day 5 - A day devoted to coastal wetlands and salt-pans will be productive for Odonata and myriad birds typical of these habitats, namely Greater Flamingo, gulls, and terns. We confidently anticipate myriad Odonata, including Long Skimmer Orthetrum trinacria, Island Damselfly Ischnura genei, Willow Emerald Chalcolestes viridis (Vander Linden, 1825), Migrant Spreadwing Lestes barbarus (Fabricius, 1798), Black-tailed Skimmer Orthetrum cancellatum (Linnaeus, 1758), Violet Dropwing Trithemis annulata (Palisot de Beauvais, 1805), and Black Pennant Selysiothemis nigra (Vander Linden, 1825)
  • Day 6 - Transfer day back to Catania. We will make our unhurried way back across Sicily, today providing us with some 'wriggle room' to stop en route for further Odonata opportunities. Overnight at a comfortable four star airport hotel, allowing guests to choose their time of onward departure the following day or, indeed, to stay on to explore more of the cultural aspects of this fascinating island
  • Day 7 - Departure day
