Tour Description

Crete is the largest of the Greek islands and plays host to a famously rich flora, spread across a wide variety of habitats. Isolated from Europe, Asia and Africa yet relatively close to all three, the island's flora has a distinctively Mediterranean feel, but there are a high number of endemic species to be found here.

Crete is characteristically mountainous, and the main montane areas are separated by large valleys, hence local microclimates can vary considerably from sea level to the highest peaks. This gives ample scope for the adventurous orchid-hunter to explore the island and find some very special orchids indeed.

There are a number of orchids to be found on Crete throughout most of the year but the month of April generally plays host to the greatest number of species, including rare endemics such as Ophrys cretica, Ophrys dictynnae, Anacamptis boryi, Orchis sitiaca, and perhaps Orchis prisca.

We will focus on a handful of sites in order to maximise our time in the field and would hope to see approaching forty distinct species during a gentle-paced tour, with fabulous opportunities to explore the outstanding scenery and catch sight of other exciting wildlife.

With our star European orchid-hunter Dr Richard Bate at the helm, our guests are sure to see some very special orchids indeed. We're delighted to add Crete to our growing and renowned portfolio of 'Orchids of...' tours - this one will be another strong and popular tour going forwards for guests who have enjoyed orchid-hunting with us elsewhere in Greece and Italy.

Tour Itinerary

  • DAY 1
Arrival at Heraklion airport, and head inland towards the centre of the island, where we will be given an introduction to some of the island's endemic species including an audience with the spectacular Ophrys cretica.
  • DAYS 2 & 3
Full days orchid-hunting in the Spili area. This area of Crete is justly renowned as one of THE orchid hotspots in Europe, and we will devote the orchids the full attention they deserve here in this extremely rich and productive region of the island. We will be hoping to see a large variety of the orchids that make Crete such an intoxicating destination for the orchid-hunter, with iconic targets including Ophrys creberima, Ophrys cressa, Ophrys episcopalis, Ophrys gortynia, Ophrys heldreichii, and Ophrys spruneri.
  • DAYS 4 & 5
Heading east, we will explore sites in the Lasithi region. This is another incredibly rich area for orchids where we will see a host of Mediterranean species in abundance including earlier flowering species. Our main targets here include Ophrys dictynnae and Orchis sitiaca, as well as the endemic local forms of Neotinea tridentata and Anacamptis papilionacea.
  • DAY 6
A grand finale road-trip of multiple sites ensues as we head further east still, and hope to encounter some of the more elusive species, such as the rare endemic Orchis prisca, as well as earlier-flowering species that persist in some of the microclines. In good years we can hope to catch late-flowering examples of Ophrys basilissa and Ophrys fleischmannii.
  • DAY 7
Return to Heraklion airport, and tour concludes

If time permits, we’ll stop en route to visit a good orchid site or two.

As with all of our tours, we want our guests to enjoy the very best views of the very best wildlife and, as such, we think it’s important to retain a little flexibility in the holiday itinerary. This means that we may choose to swap days around to take into account local weather conditions, or the timing of the flight or flowering season we find upon arrival at our holiday destination. Rest assured, we will ensure you visit all the best sites, and we have your best interests and comfort at heart!
