Tour Description

Based in Azrou, at 1,250m in the Middle Atlas mountains of Morocco, this unique and exclusive tour is designed to take in the best of the spring butterfly species that inhabit this region of North Africa.

Many of the species found here are either absent from Europe, or are hard to find there. Here in the Atlas Mountains, the sought-after likes of Spanish and Aetherie Fritillary are common, along with Sooty Orange Tip, Portuguese Dappled White, False Baton Blue and Lorquin’s Blue.

Most enticing of all, there are some butterflies endemic to this mountain range that we will be targeting during the course of our week in North Africa. These include the eponymous Atlas Blue, Martin’s Blue, Vogel’s Blue, Moroccan Orange Tip, and the delightful Fatma’s Bavius Blue.

Other local species of interest may include Desert Orange Tip, Allard’s Silver Line, African Knapweed Fritillary, Vaucher's Heath, Scarce Green-striped White, Greenish Black Tip, and False Marbled Skipper.

The standard of the road system is good in this part of Morocco, and most of the sites are within a 60-70 minute drive of our comfortable hotel base. The hotel itself is a modern one, with excellent standards of comfort and cuisine.

This tour is suitable for those with a decent level of mobility, as many of the sites are on hillsides and in gullies where the bulk of the flora (and hence butterflies) are to be found.

As with all of our tours, we want our guests to enjoy the very best views of the very best wildlife and, as such, we think it’s important to retain a little flexibility in the holiday itinerary. This means that we may choose to swap days around to take into account local weather conditions, or the timing of the flight or flowering season we find upon arrival at our holiday destination. Rest assured, we will ensure you visit all the best sites, and we have your best interests and comfort at heart!

*We’ll meet at the airport as this is a convenient travel hub for many. However, we appreciate that some guests may have chosen to travel via ferry from Spain and thence overland via rail to Rabat. The main railway station in town is Rabat Ville, and there is a regular airport shuttle bus, operated by Alsa-City-Bus, linking the station with the airport.
